Reclaimed wood offers a complex beauty and character with which new wood just can't compete. We remill reclaimed wood to expose underlying color and density, or deliver with the natural patina of weather, wear markings and age.
Reclaimed
Woodbank's reclaimed wood materials reflect the character, beauty and durability that simply isn't available in new wood. By definition, reclaimed wood is a post-consumer resource, and has the weathering, wear marks, nail holes and stains, and other unique signs of its previous life as an Industrial Revolution-era mill, barn, water flume, even wine and beer vats and water storage tanks.

Why Use Reclaimed?

The re-use of post-consumer wood material helps to preserve virgin forests.

Wood saved from well-used but no longer useful buildings has a depth of character and beauty that can't be duplicated by new wood.

The careful dismantling of large structures often yields very large dimensional lumber and especially wide and long planks unavailable in virgin wood.

A managed deconstruction process provides retraining and jobs for skilled workers in the area.

Some wood species are now only available in the form of reclaimed materials.

Old-growth timber is generally denser, straighter and more stable.

Reclaimed wood is air dried for 50 to 150 years. Air drying or seasoning prevents further checking after installation.

Wood procured out of a managed dismantling project prevents significant waste.
Deconstruction vs. Demolition:
Demolition, the more common method of removing a building, is the destruction of most or all of a structure by bulldozer, wrecking ball or explosives. Using this method, a smaller crew can clear away an existing building more quickly and inexpensively, but the result is massive amounts of wasted, unusable material destined for the landfill.

Deconstruction involves the carefully managed dismantling of a building with the goal of preserving valuable building components, including exceptionally large dimension timbers and flooring planks no longer available in new wood.

Some of our available reclaimed materials are sourced out of Woodbank-managed deconstruction projects, which involve programs such as worker retraining, environmental impact studies and mitigation.
