Green Building Programs
The green building movement is exploding in California and across the U.S., led by a number of innovative green building programs. Most attempt to organize and codify green design and construction practices by creating one or more rating systems. The two leading green building programs in California are U.S. Green Building's LEED program, and Build It Green's Green Point Rated program (see summaries at right).
What makes a building green?
A green building is consciously designed to meet specific objectives such as incorporating reclaimed, salvage and/or FSC-certified building materials, using energy, water, and other resources more efficiently, and reducing the overall impact to the environment. A structure that is designed, built or renovated, used or reused, and maintained in an ecological and resource-efficient way is considered a green building.
Will building green save me money?
According to a study by Lisa Fay Matthiessen and Peter Morris of cost-management firm Davis Langdon, "there is no significant difference in average costs for green buildings as compared to non-green buildings. Many project teams are building green buildings with little or no added cost, and with budgets well within the cost range of non-green buildings with similar programs... Building green may cost a bit more up front, but will save money over the longrun via lower operating costs over the life of the building."

Green Point Rated
Build It Green is a non-profit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose mission is to promote healthy, energy- and resource-efficient buildings in California. Its green building rating system is called Green Point Rated. Unlike LEED, Green Point Rated does not address commerical construction, but instead focuses on residential construction in three areas: remodels, new single-family homes, and new multi-family homes. Green Point is the most widely-used residential green building program in California. For more information about Build It Green and the Green Point Rated program, visit http://www.builditgreen.org.
